By Bob Berry

Congratulations to Bob Berry as PTR’s August winner in the Travel Photo of the Year competition.

One may see more of his work at his website.

Bob describes his photograph:

“Having seen images of this area and been excited by the vast open space, we trekked off over the mountain passes, down the roughest gravel roads, managed to get the 4×4 stuck in the sand, but with elbow grease, a lot of grunting and some carefully placed stones got her out and journeyed on till we eventually arrived at this deserted beach, sea mist clung to the hillside, clouds began to form over the peaks of the mountains, waves caressed the beautiful untrodden sand, we began to get that feeling that no man had ever been there before and our exploration was rewarded, then on the horizon appeared some fellow travellers, enjoying a lengthy stroll, with the soft sand beneath their feet, a great experienced shared.

“Jandia beach is pretty accessible, but seems to attract only the hardy, and is therefore very unspoiled and gives you that sense of being alone with the waves, the mountains and that incredible stretch of beach. well worth a visit. Great for sunsets and the drive back is amazing in the dark.

Snowy London

By Ion Paciu

Congratulations to Ion Paciu as the July winner of the Travel Photo of the Year Contest. Given the heat that currently embraces the United Kingdom, it seemed appropriate to the PTR Team to select this image as a reminder of just how cold it got in the UK during last December.

As Ion says: ” London like never seen before, under light fluffy cotton-wool stuff you in pretty calendars for December in other European countries. It was about 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 degrees Celsius) enough to bring much of the country and its capital to a standstill. Airports were closed, London’s buses weren’t running and the Tube was struggling. Even the train companies’ website had crashed due to the number of people trying to find out if they could get to work. Lucky me, living on the South Bank and normally walking to work, I grabbed my camera and rushed towards the river. I managed to get there before others and captured a few images of the unspoiled white carpet.”

Dead Vlei

By Rafael Rojas

Click on Photograph for a larger version.

Congratulations to Rafael Rojas for his selection as the April Winner in the PTR Travel Photo of the Year Contest. His image has also been chosen for display in our Featured Photos Page.

The editors of PTR chose this entry because of its technical mastery. Photographed at night, with the shadow of the dead tree created by moonlight with a stunning background of stars and dunes, this work is highly unusual and is a joy to view.

“Shot made during a couple of days before full moon. That night, we waited till the moon’s height was such the shade of the tree could be taken into the shot, being “linked” with the projection of the branch. The powerful moon light gave lots of details to the landscape while being able to record the star filled sky. The bonus, the vaporous clouds that came during the night and that fill areas of the sky without merging with the branches. In terms of quality, I had to sacrifice it a little in terms of ISO (so that the stars were not blurred) and in terms of aperture (2.8, so that the sensor could “see” more stars). Photography is compromise!

“Taken during our last trip to Namibia (see more in www.rafaelrojasphoto.com, last additions gallery).”

Congratulations to Nick Board for the photograph “Plaszow Memorial.” The editors of Photo Travel Review Magazine believe this to be an excellent example of minimalism to document a travel experience.

This is a photograph of the memorial at the infamous Plaszow Labour camp in the Podgorse area of Krakow Poland. Now a nature reserve, little remains, although the Gestapo house and Amon Goth’s Villa overlooking the site are still there looking like they haven’t been touched for sixty years.

Lost in a Warming World

By Dennis Bromage
Personal Website

Congratulations to Dennis Bromage for his photograph “Lost in a Warming World.”

Dennis describes his work:

“Polar bears on an ice flow around 60 miles off the coast of Svalbard, in the high arctic summer. The Cubs are around 6 months old and face an uncertain future in a word that is fast changing around them. LOST?

“I hope the image illustrates the vulnerability of these stunning creatures struggling for survival in the most fragile environment on the planet. The title is intended to ask a question rather than make a final statement as hopefully there is still time to make a difference.”

The editors of Photo Travel Review Magazine agree. All of us should be asking questions about what is affecting our world. This image speaks loudly of the affects of Global warming and the changes that are occurring world wide.

Anyone can enter the contest. Details are here.
